Stephen Hughes is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in drawing and mark-making. Working across paper and textile surfaces, he explores the relationship between art and fashion, translating original drawings into distinctive fabric designs and wearable artworks.

His ongoing projects investigate the creative potential of drawing as a starting point for fashion print and soft accessories, transforming expressive marks into unique textile pieces. Through this work, Hughes blurs the boundaries between artwork and design. 

Drawing on early experience working with menswear and womenswear designers at demi-couture level, alongside freelance design and illustration projects, his practice combines artistic exploration with a deep understanding of art-working, drawing and fashion. Hughes has exhibited and sold work through galleries and independent stores and is also a Senior Lecturer in Fashion at De Montfort University, Leicester.

In his recent work, Hughes explores themes of identity and personal experience through the depiction of the male figure. Drawing on his experiences as a gay man, he develops life studies that are subsequently abstracted through processes of rescaling, layering, and fragmentation, creating compositions that navigate the space between representation and memory.
